In 2020, rail transportation of coal decreased in Ukraine

Rail transportation of coal in Ukraine last year significantly decreased – by 17% in annual comparison, to 48.6 million tons. First of all this contributed to a lower demand for fuel in the fuel – load thermal generation was limited during autumn and winter 2019-20 due to mild weather conditions, and a strict quarantine was weakened when trade in a number of industrial enterprises.

According to Metal Expert, a total of 18.6 million tons of coal were sent to Ukrainian thermal power plants in 2020, which is 24% less than a year earlier. Including deliveries from the domestic market amounted to 16.2 million tons (-18%), from the external market – 2.4 million tons (-49%). It should be noted that the imported fuel is almost completely represented by anthracite and the T brand from Russia.

Shipments of raw materials for coking and PCI coal for metallurgists remained at the level of last year – 17 million tons. The majority of the products – 13.3 million tons (-1%) - are from Russia, Kazakhstan, the USA, Poland and the Czech Republic. Local coal mining companies provided 3.8 million tons (+4%).
